Joseph Pilates designed machines whose purpose is to help the practitioner understand how his or her body works in particular positions. The machines that can be found in classic Pilates studios can be divided into two groups.
The first group includes machines with springs such as:
1. Reformer
2. Cadillac
3. Wunda Chair
4. Electric Chair
5. Arm Chair
6. Magic Circle
The second group includes equipment without springs, such as:
1. Barrel/ Samll Barrel
2. Spine Corrector
Machines from the first group, i.e. those with built-in springs, are used to work with resistance. Working with the resistance of the spring helps the exerciser gain more control during movements and promotes the development of muscle mass without straining the joints. Resistance training is used both in rehabilitation and in strength training for healthy people and competitive athletes. When working with springs, the muscles are engaged throughout the exercise because the springs are worked in both directions. First, overcoming their resistance, and then generating this resistance yourself. This means that we can achieve better results with fewer repetitions and shorter training than by performing traditional exercises on the mat for the same or longer time.
Machines from the second group are characterized by an oval shape. This is not a coincidence because the shape of these devices is perfectly matched to the bending shape of our spine. The arches and barrel roll are intended to enable the exerciser to increase the flexibility of his body by placing his body on them without building compression of the spine, i.e. without excessive load on it. The advantage of the equipment is that when performing various positions, the exerciser's body receives a lot of support from the round shape of the equipment, so that gravity does not work to the detriment of our spine.
